Choosing a practical prompting course

Look for a repeatable way to improve results, not a collection of prompts to memorise.
A useful prompting course should give you opportunities to draft instructions, inspect an answer, revise the prompt and test again on a different example.
Three approaches worth comparing
Google Prompting Essentials centres on a five-step approach and a reusable prompt library. It is a candidate if you want a compact, structured starting point for everyday tasks.
IBM’s Generative AI: Prompt Engineering Basics lists labs and a final project. This makes it worth considering if you prefer guided practice alongside explanations of prompting methods.
Vanderbilt’s Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT takes a longer route through reusable prompt patterns. The provider lists about 20 hours and seven assignments. Choose it only if you can make room for that commitment, rather than assuming more content automatically means a better fit.
A free option before paying
Anthropic’s AI Fluency course provides a broader approach to collaborating with AI. Our view: it is worth a look if your main difficulty is deciding what to delegate and how to judge the answer, rather than finding another prompt template.
Try this before you choose
Write a short fictional customer enquiry. Ask an AI tool to draft a reply with a specific goal, audience and length. Check whether the reply invents facts. Then add the missing context and ask it to revise.
Notice where you struggled. If it was expressing the task, look for instruction-writing exercises. If it was judging accuracy, look for evaluation and responsible-use material. If it was applying the method repeatedly, look for projects rather than demonstrations alone.
Questions to ask of the syllabus
- Will I create and revise my own prompts?
- Do exercises include examples of poor outputs and how to improve them?
- Can I use the tool available to me, or must I buy a subscription?
- Will the method transfer to a new task after the course ends?
Specific tool interfaces can change. The more durable value is in framing a task, providing relevant context, setting constraints and checking the answer. A course title mentioning “prompt engineering” should not be treated as a promise of a new career.
